The Outsiders

Task Seven
First finish the book then:
Chose one of the following to complete:
PLOT: Summarise the plot of the book.  Use the chapter headings as a guide.

SETTING: When does the story take place?  How do you know?  Give specific examples.  Where are the locations this story takes place?

CHARACTERISATION: Describe two characters, one from the Socs and one from the Greasers psychologically and physically.

THEME: What do you think the theme of The Outsiders is?  Support your answers with examples from the story.  Questions to prompt are: "What message is there in the book?"; "Why did the author write this book?"; and "What have you learned about life from reading this novel?".

POINT OF VIEW: Point of view is the literary term for the "voice" that tells the story.  A novel is usually first person, 3rd person (observer), or omniscient.
From what point of view is The Outsiders told?  Who tells the story?  Is the story effective when told from this point of view?  Why? 


Task Six
Research "Group Think".  How does this phenomenon relate to the book and to life at school?  Be ready to share next week.

Task Five (28 August)
QUIZ TIME! Complete Questions 1-10 
PICTURE TIME! Draw you into the 6 characters with different hair and clothes.  
Read chapters 8-9

Task Four (21 August)
Music Preference: The Greasers like Elvis Presley, the Socs like the Beatles and Buck Merril likes Hank Williams.  Who do you like?  Find songs for each and record the title and rate them 1 (awful) to 5 (awesome).
Read chapters 5, 6 and 7.

TASK THREE: (18 August)
1. Finish the Quiz Time for chapters 1-2.
2. Read chapter 3 and 4 (to page 82)  bearing in mind the Greasers and the Socs may have been able to live more harmoniously if they knew and applied some simple techniques of conflict management.  Instead of beating a face with a ring-covered hand, threatening an opponent with a broken bottle, or throwing a soda in someone's face, the angry ones might have resolved their problems peacefully.  Write down at least two different ways you could resolve the conflict in the following:
A.  Darry is angry with his brother Ponyboy because he is two hours late.  Darry is tempted to hit him for the first time.
B.  Johnny and Ponyboy are minding their own business late at night in the park.  A group of drunken Socs comes after them.
C. Dally makes Cherry mad.  When he offers her a soda, she is tempted to throw it in his face.
Be prepared to chat about these next Monday 25 August.
